Themes of healing through nature are evinced in "Reflections on Times Past," which shows Tezeno in a reflective state with a bouquet of colorful tulips as a healing reminder of the need to be open to the presence of God and birds as symbols of the artist’s guardians and keepers of her cherished memories.Ĭulturally rich moments from the artist’s childhood are depicted in "When Family Gathers," in which a young Tezeno is portrayed sitting at a dinner table engaged in conversation with multigenerational family members. In "Beyond the Path There is a New Birth," Tezeno entrusts us with vulnerable life changes and embraces the process of personal discovery and growth. She incorporates her love for seeing people dressed elegantly into figures adorned in stylish clothing to capture a sense of dignity. Tezeno uses a combination of richly patterned hand-painted papers, acrylic paint, vintage buttons inherited from her grandmother, and other media to portray the intimacies and joys of growing up in South Texas. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 2nd, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.Īs a continuation of My Life, My Story, Tezeno’s 2022 solo exhibition, this series of collage-paintings builds on visual narratives depicting soulful everyday scenes of Black life, introducing us to new friends, family and endearing moments from the artist’s life. I remember the large picture windows in the dining and living rooms. I can still visualize our home there, despite all the years. The school was so overcrowded there were THREE shifts for kindergarten instead of the usual two. My sister was in kindergarten and 1st grades and attended an elementary school near our home. I attended 5th and 6th grade in Chicago Heights, Garfield Elementary School, I think it was. We felt like we had died and gone to heaven! We lived in the rental townhouses-I believe ours was on 26th Street, if I remember right. My granddad made all the arrangements and helped us move. Mom and my sister and I were living in Chicago and had a terrible experience with our landlord. ![]() My dad was in the military and had been sent overseas. I lived in Park Forest as a child during the early 1950s. We may know something about your question. If you see a topic there and want to expand on it, please share it with us! Remember, many people are not on Facebook and don't read memories, there. And, you will notice, you can write a much longer memoir to be put on our website to share with people. Remember to make a copy of your memory and submit it to us, too. If you are interested in helping with that, contact us. We have joined Facebook ( like us!) and have a Facebook page for the museum ( like our museum page!). We hope to get a "Park Forest Memories " group started sometime to capture those entries, but are looking at other social networking sites. We still accept memoirs sent to us via email. It is still a place to reconnect with people who grew up here. It formerly had some wonderful memory streams going, but that changed with Facebook's new format. (Active links are further down the page.) There is a Facebook group, "Grew up in Park Forest". We are on Facebook! Become a fan of "Park Forest Historical Society" and of "1950s Park Forest House Museum!"
